reported that executives at the six largest nonprofit, tax-exempt
hospital systems in the country all made more than $1 million a year. A
survey of hospitals in the state of California revealed an average base
salary for CEOs of around $500,000. Even CEOs at small hospitals can
receive more than $1 million a year in total compensation. At larger
facilities, the numbers get even higher. According to the "Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette," Jeffrey Romoff, president and CEO of the University of
Pittsburgh Medical Center, made more than $4 million in salary, bonuses
and benefits in 2009; one of his state counterparts, Christopher Olivia,
CEO at West Penn Allegheny Health System, made almost $2 million that
same year.
